Common problems with uPVC doors

Most modern properties have uPVC doors, but despite being a popular choice among homeowners, they’re not without their problems. Whether it’s a result of general wear and tear or the use of poor quality components, it’s not uncommon to find that remedial work is needed once in a while.

The good news is that in most cases uPVC door repairs are possible, therefore avoiding the need for a complete replacement. We usually find that it is the multi-point lock causing the problem rather than the door itself – and that’s something we can help you with.

Here are some of the common problems we encounter – and what can be done to put them right.

Poor quality locks

The fact is that some uPVC door manufacturers use locks that won’t stand the test of time. Everyday use can soon start to take its toll, potentially leaving your property at risk. You ideally need a lock with a multi-point function to make sure your home is secure at all times.

Some of our customers choose to completely replace their uPVC door locks for peace of mind, while others decide on a lock repair. It really comes down to the condition of your existing lock and what changes will need to be made.

The key won’t go in!

Cheaper locks often degrade over time and, bearing in mind that this is the only component protecting your property against break-ins, it’s not something you can afford to overlook.

If you’re finding it difficult to get your key into the lock, chances are this is because the inner components have seized. There are a series of small pins inside the barrel and if dirt gets inside of the lock this can cause it to jam, meaning your key won’t go in as it should.

In this case, a complete lock replacement is generally advisable. This is the only way you can be certain that the problem won’t arise again in the near future.

Misalignment between the door and frame

One problem that arises time and time again is that the uPVC door becomes misaligned with its frame. This can make it difficult to shut the door without using force, which increases the risk of damage.

We usually find this is because the hinges have moved, or they simply weren’t installed correctly to start with. Some hinges can easily be adjusted using an allen key while others may need to be replaced completely and replaced with new.

You’ll need to determine whether the hinge needs to be adjusted horizontally or vertically, and if any compressional changes are required to realign the uPVC door.
